Japan awarded 'Fossil of the Day' at COP27 for world's highest public investment in fossil fuels

TOKYO -- Japan was awarded "Fossil of the Day" at the COP27 climate change summit in Egypt on Nov. 9 by the Climate Action Network (CAN) for having invested the largest amount of public money in fossil fuel projects in the world.
CAN, which is comprised of environmental non-governmental organizations worldwide, announced during the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, that it had selected Japan as the country most reluctant to take measures against climate change.
According to CAN, Japan put an average of $10.6 billion (about 1.5 trillion yen) of public funds into oil, coal and natural gas projects per year between 2019 and 2021. The Japanese government is looking to promote "zero-emissions thermal power" in Asia, in which fossil fuels are mixed with ammonia and hydrogen to burn at thermal power plants without emitting greenhouse gas.
However, as the plan has many problems including high costs, CAN stated, "The Japanese government is making huge efforts to export false solutions to other countries." Noting that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is not at the climate summit, CAN added, "Maybe he was too busy promoting false solutions in Japan?"
"Fossil of the Day" recipients will be announced almost every day during COP27, based on countries' policies and officials' remarks. Japan is the summit's first "winner."
